The court is considering the possibility of issuing a bench warrant for Kalaveti Ravu, the former fisheries and forestry minister, if he does not attend his next court appearance. Ravu’s co-accused, Tekata Toaisi, who serves as the ministry’s regional northern manager, appeared before Suva Magistrate Jeremaia Savou yesterday.
Toaisi, represented by attorney Joji Cakau, indicated that Ravu was unable to attend due to a work meeting in Nadi. However, state prosecutor Lavenia Ravuikadavu stated that she was not made aware of Ravu’s absence ahead of time. She expressed her concerns and requested a brief mention date, warning that a bench warrant could be issued if Ravu fails to appear.
Ravu faces allegations of interfering with a ministerial investigation related to the illegal trade of a banned species of beche-de-mer, with Toaisi charged for his assistance in the alleged misconduct, which took place between July and August of last year. The charges were authorized by the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC).
Both individuals have been granted extended bail and the case has been postponed until January 21.
This situation highlights the ongoing scrutiny of public officials and reinforces the commitment to maintaining the integrity of government operations. As the legal proceedings move forward, there is hope that accountability will prevail, ultimately leading to a stronger governance framework.
