The Suva Magistrate’s Court has scheduled a trial for former Acting Fiji Corrections Service Commissioner Salote Panapasa. During her court appearance before Magistrate Krishan Prasad, she faced two counts of abuse of office and a related charge of general dishonesty that allegedly resulted in a financial loss.
The charges stem from allegations that between August and September 2023, while employed in Suva, Panapasa directed officers to use building materials belonging to the Fiji Corrections Service for her private residence located in Kinoya. Additionally, it is alleged that from August to October 2023, she instructed a Corrections officer to modify weekly reports to legitimize the usage of those materials for her home.
The court intended to review the agreed facts of the case; however, Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) lawyer Mary Takinana indicated that only two facts had been agreed upon by Panapasa’s lawyer: her name and position. The remaining details of the case are contested. Both parties have agreed to set the trial date for June 23 to 27 of next year, and her bail has been extended.
This case highlights ongoing efforts to uphold accountability and integrity within public service roles. As it progresses to trial, it reflects the judicial system’s commitment to ensuring that all allegations of misconduct are thoroughly examined.
Overall, while the situation is serious for Panapasa, it also underscores the importance of due process and the need for transparency in government operations, as these principles serve to strengthen public trust in institutional integrity.
