Court Set to Decide on Sayed-Khaiyum’s Bail Amid Ongoing Legal Drama

The Suva Magistrates Court is expected to make a decision today regarding the bail variation request submitted by former Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum last week.

On Friday, Resident Magistrate Sufia Hamza declined to intervene in the ongoing case involving Sayed-Khaiyum, which is being overseen by her brother, Magistrate Yogesh Prasad.

Sayed-Khaiyum was taken to the hospital on Thursday after reportedly experiencing severe pain, assisted by his aide and brother, Riyaz Sayed-Khaiyum.

Sayed-Khaiyum faces charges alongside former Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama and former Health Minister Dr. Neil Sharma for allegedly not meeting the statutory requirements for tenders as outlined in the 2010 Procurement Regulation. Bainimarama is charged with one count of abuse of office, while Sayed-Khaiyum is facing one count of abuse of office and one count of obstructing justice. Sharma has been charged with two counts of abuse of office and two counts of breach of trust as a Public Service employee.

The proceedings have been postponed until 12:30 PM, and Sayed-Khaiyum is required to appear in court today.
