Court Remands Trio in Serious Drug and Assault Charges

Illustration of Baleiwai, Jiuta and Susewa remanded

Three men have been remanded by Suva’s Magistrates Court after facing serious charges relating to the possession of illicit drugs and assault. The accused, Lemeki Baleiwai, 29, Maciu Jiuta, 27, and Asaeli Susewa, 23, appeared in court before Resident Magistrate Sufia Hamza.

Baleiwai is charged with possession of marijuana, while Jiuta and Susewa are facing charges of seriously assaulting two police officers during a raid. The Prosecutor reported to the Court that all necessary disclosures have been made available to the defendants, who have acknowledged receipt.

The case has been scheduled for a bail hearing and further mention on November 29, with proceedings now transferred to Court four.

This situation underscores the ongoing challenges authorities face in combating drug-related offenses and ensuring public safety. As the judicial process continues, the community remains hopeful for a resolution that addresses both the legal ramifications and the broader social issues associated with drug use and violence.
