Court Orders DPP to Deliver Vital Affidavit in High-Profile Case

The Magistrates Court has directed the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) to submit its supplementary affidavit by this afternoon concerning the case of former Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum.

Senior DPP Counsel Unaisi Ratukalou informed the Court that she had only received instructions the previous day to request additional time to file her affidavit, related to a differing opinion from another neurologist regarding Sayed-Khaiyum’s health.

The counsel also mentioned uncertainty regarding Sayed-Khaiyum’s medical condition and indicated that a health review could be conducted in Fiji, rather than requiring him to travel to Singapore.

Defense attorney Davenesh Sharma opposed the prosecution’s request for additional time, arguing that the DPP had adequate time to respond since they served documents on July 15. He emphasized that his client was prepared to testify, and prosecution witnesses were ready to provide evidence.

Sharma further highlighted his client’s readiness to proceed with the case, noting that other pending matters and a trial in the High Court were set for Wednesday. He questioned the DPP’s inactivity since July 15.

The case has been adjourned until tomorrow at noon for a bail variation hearing.
