Minister for Defence and Veteran Affairs Pio Tikoduadua announced that a court martial regarding the RFNS Puamau incident is set to commence shortly. This declaration follows findings from the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) Board of Inquiry (BOI) into the grounding of the Fiji Navy vessel on June 10 while navigating the passage to Fulaga Island.
The investigation revealed significant breaches and negligence among the crew, highlighting a failure to adhere to professional navigation practices and maritime skills. Mr. Tikoduadua confirmed that charges have been filed against the individuals involved, and they will be brought before the court.
In addition to the legal proceedings, he also mentioned that the RFNS Puamau will be decommissioned, with plans for it to be scuttled and sunk.
This unfortunate incident underscores the need for strict adherence to maritime standards to ensure the safety of naval operations. As the court martial progresses, it is hoped that important lessons will be learned to prevent similar occurrences in the future, contributing to the ongoing upliftment and professionalism within the military maritime sector.
Summary: A court martial regarding the grounding of the RFNS Puamau will soon begin following the RFMF Board of Inquiry’s findings of significant negligence among the crew. Minister Tikoduadua stated that charges have been made, and the vessel will be decommissioned and sunk.
