The Minister for Defence and Veteran Affairs, Pio Tikoduadua, announced that a court martial concerning the RFNS Puamau incident will commence shortly. This announcement follows the findings of a Board of Inquiry (BOI) by the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) regarding the grounding of the Fiji Navy vessel on June 10 as it approached Fulaga Island.
The BOI revealed that the incident stemmed from substantial breaches of protocols, negligence, and a lack of adherence to established navigation practices and maritime skills by the crew. Minister Tikoduadua stated that those responsible have been charged and will face court proceedings. Additionally, the ship is set to be decommissioned and will ultimately be scuttled and sunk.
This step signifies accountability within the military ranks and demonstrates the government’s commitment to maintaining maritime safety standards. The judicial process aims to uphold responsibility while preventing similar incidents in the future.
In a hopeful outlook, this incident could serve as an essential learning opportunity for the Fiji Navy, encouraging improvements in training and navigation practices, ultimately enhancing the safety and effectiveness of Fiji’s naval operations.
