Court Grants Bail Variation to Kaba Amid Corruption Allegations

Sanjay Kaba, the Managing Director of Houng Lee Kaba Jacob Limited, has successfully had his second bail variation application approved by the Suva Magistrates Court. The court’s decision today allows Kaba to surrender his passport as part of the conditions established during a previous court sitting.

Kaba is currently facing serious allegations from the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) regarding obtaining a substantial financial advantage. The charges center on his conduct as a board member of Telecom Fiji Limited and Amalgamated Telecom Holdings Limited, during which he allegedly bid for a lucrative tender through his own company, securing over $766,000 between June 2022 and July 2023, without declaring his directorial interests.

As part of the proceedings, Kaba had previously indicated plans to travel internationally, and the court has lifted a temporary stop departure order, which means he can travel abroad between March 1 and March 18, 2025. To meet the bail conditions, Kaba has pledged $75,000 to the Judiciary Trust Account and also surrendered his mother’s passport as security.

The case has been set to be adjourned until April 3. This ongoing situation underscores the significant issues of accountability and integrity within corporate governance, and as authorities intensify their efforts against corruption, Kaba’s case serves as a pivotal moment highlighting the importance of ethical practices in both public and private sectors.

With the next court date approaching, there is a sense of hope for a resolution that reinforces standards of transparency and fosters a culture of accountability within Fiji’s governance. The eventual outcome may set a vital precedent for future practices regarding integrity and ethical leadership in the region.
