Spread the love

Former Minister for Fisheries and Forests, Kalaveti Ravu, was notably absent from a court hearing this morning related to a charge of abuse of office. Ravu faces this charge alongside former Regional Manager North, Tekata Toaisi, who attended the proceedings at the Suva Magistrates Court under the guidance of Magistrate Jeremaia Savou.

The court was informed by FICAC Counsel Lavenia Ravuikadavu that they were not notified of Ravu’s absence. She warned that if he fails to appear at the next hearing, FICAC would seek a bench warrant for his arrest.

Toaisi’s lawyer, Jioji Cakau, clarified that Ravu was unavailable due to attending a Parliament Committee Meeting in Nadi. Cakau also indicated that Ravu’s legal team intends to submit pre-trial documents and disclosures to FICAC by this Friday.

The allegations against Ravu state that he interfered with a Ministry of Forestry investigation concerning the illegal trade of banned beche-de-mer species between July 25, 2023, and August 31, 2023. Toaisi is alleged to have facilitated Ravu in committing this abuse of office. The case has been adjourned to later this month, with a trial date confirmed for February.

This situation highlights the importance of accountability and integrity in public office, as the legal proceedings will scrutinize the actions of public officials. With upcoming court dates set, there is hope that the judicial process will work effectively to uphold justice.
