Former Minister for Fisheries and Forests, Kalaveti Ravu, was notably absent from court this morning, where he faces a charge of abuse of office. He is charged alongside Tekata Toaisi, the former Regional Manager North, who attended the proceedings at the Suva Magistrates Court before Magistrate Jeremaia Savou.
FICAC Counsel Lavenia Ravuikadavu stated that they were not informed of Ravu’s absence. She indicated that if he fails to attend the next court session, FICAC may seek a bench warrant for his arrest. Toaisi’s attorney, Jioji Cakau, explained that Ravu’s absence was due to his participation in a Parliament Committee Meeting in Nadi this morning, and reassured the court that Ravu’s legal counsel would submit the necessary pre-trial documents and disclosures to FICAC by this Friday.
The allegations against Ravu detail that between July 25 and August 31, 2023, he allegedly interfered with a lawful Ministry of Forestry investigation concerning the illegal trade of banned beche-de-mer species. Furthermore, it is claimed that Toaisi facilitated Ravu in this alleged misconduct.
The proceedings have been rescheduled for mention on the 21st of this month, with the trial date set for February.
This case highlights ongoing efforts to uphold accountability in governmental positions, reflecting a commitment to tackling corruption and promoting transparency. As the legal process unfolds, it is crucial for justice to be served, reinforcing public trust in institutions.
