A former accountant of the Fiji Rugby Union, Pawan Deo, and his wife, Subhashni Mudaliar, are set to appear in court again on April 22. The couple recently had a mention of their case in the magistrate’s court in Suva, where the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption was expected to clarify its position regarding representation. However, due to the absence of Magistrate Krishan Prasad’s court session, all matters have been postponed.
Deo and Mudaliar are facing serious charges, including conspiracy to defraud, obtaining a gain, and securing financial advantage unlawfully. Allegations indicate that in 2022, they collaborated to unlawfully acquire $53,788.75 from the FRU through fraudulent activities that involved processing unauthorized payments to Sports Supplies Limited. This scheme reportedly resulted in an unauthorized gain of $7,291.83 for the company, despite it being ineligible for such funds.
This case underscores the ongoing efforts of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption to address corruption and uphold accountability within organizations. The upcoming court date will be critical in determining the course of legal proceedings against the couple.
The outcome of this case serves as a reminder of the importance of transparency and integrity in financial dealings, especially within organizations responsible for public interests, like sports unions.
