A 54-year-old farmer and a 26-year-old woman from Seqaqa are set to appear in Labasa Magistrates Court today, facing charges for allegedly obtaining financial advantage. The incident reportedly occurred on July 19, 2022, when the two accused unlawfully acquired $356 from a victim via the mpaisa mobile payment platform.
Investigators found that the farmer had contacted the victim, claiming that she had incorrectly received money and requested that it be sent back. Trusting the individual, the victim complied, and subsequently, the farmer transferred the funds to the young woman’s mpaisa account without the victim’s consent.
Upon discovering the unauthorized transaction, the victim promptly reported the matter to the Taveuni Police Station. Both individuals are currently in police custody and are scheduled to appear in court later today.
This case highlights the growing issues related to mobile payment scams, emphasizing the need for greater awareness and caution when dealing with electronic transactions. It serves as a reminder for individuals to verify any requests for funds, particularly from unknown sources. The legal proceedings may also act as a deterrent to similar fraudulent activities in the future, encouraging a safer online financial environment.
