The High Court in Suva has directed that Edward Nand, convicted of murdering Narend Chand, receive medical treatment at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital following his court appearance, where he displayed visible injuries. His legal representative, Sunil Gosai, raised concerns for Nand’s safety, alleging that he had been assaulted by correctional officers the day prior.

Gosai pointed out that Nand presented in court with bandages showing signs of blood and significant facial swelling, underscoring his urgent need for medical care. Justice Siainiu Fa’alogo has approved this medical treatment before Nand is returned to the remand center.

Nand, along with co-defendant Salimoni Lagicere, was found guilty for the murder of Narend Chand, a Fiji-born Canadian, in February 2023 in Korovou, Tailevu. Reports indicate that Chand was deceived into meeting someone he believed to be a woman he had been in contact with online, only to discover it was a fake profile created by one of the accused.

The sentencing for both Nand and Lagicere is scheduled for March 7, 2025. This case shines a light on the critical issues surrounding online safety and the potential dangers of digital interactions. As the legal proceedings progress, there is hope that this case will raise public awareness of the significant risks associated with online deception, emphasizing the necessity of caution in social media engagements.
