Court Delays Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum’s Health Review Amid Stalled Proceedings

The Magistrates Court has granted the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions until this afternoon to submit its supplementary affidavit in the case involving former Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum.

During the hearing, Senior DPP Counsel Unaisi Ratukalou informed the Court that she received instructions only yesterday to request additional time to file her supplementary affidavit regarding the differing medical opinion of another neurologist concerning Sayed-Khaiyum’s health issues. Ratukalou indicated that they are undecided about whether a health review can be conducted in Fiji and noted that Sayed-Khaiyum does not need to travel to Singapore for medical assessments.

Defense attorney Davenesh Sharma opposed the prosecution’s motion, arguing that the DPP had sufficient time to respond since they provided documents on July 15. He raised concerns about pending matters in other courts and emphasized that Sayed-Khaiyum is prepared to testify, as well as the Prosecution Witnesses who are ready to provide evidence.

The hearing on the bail variation has now been postponed until noon tomorrow.
