The Suva Magistrates Court has granted Sanjay Kaba, Managing Director of Houng Lee Kaba Jacob Limited, permission to travel overseas for business purposes under specific conditions set by the court. Kaba intends to travel from April 17 to April 29, and again from May 2 to May 19, as confirmed by his legal counsel.

During the hearing, Magistrate Charles Ratakele noted Kaba’s previous good behavior and strong ties to Fiji, which contributed to the decision to allow his travel while imposing conditions to ensure compliance. Kaba’s passport will be released to him for this purpose.

Kaba is currently facing charges of obtaining a financial advantage of over $766,000 during his time as a board member of Telecom Fiji Limited and Amalgamated Telecom Holdings Limited. It is alleged that he engaged in misconduct by submitting a tender through his company for project management services and failed to disclose his directorship status, which rendered the company ineligible for the financial benefits acquired.

This case draws attention to ongoing efforts in Fiji to combat corruption and uphold ethical standards within corporate governance. The Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) is closely monitoring these proceedings to reinforce accountability in leadership roles.

The next court session is scheduled for May 22, where the finalized agreement of facts is expected to be filed. There is a sense of optimism that these proceedings might help contribute to greater transparency and integrity across governance in Fiji. The outcome of Kaba’s trial remains under scrutiny, but it exemplifies the critical importance of ethical leadership in public and corporate sectors, presenting an opportunity for meaningful reforms.
