Justice Minister Siromi Turaga has stated that allegations made by former supervisor of elections, Mohammed Saneem, regarding his treatment while in police custody should be resolved in court. This statement was made during an interview at Cuvu in Nadroga.

Earlier this week, in the Suva Magistrate’s Court, Mr. Saneem described his detention experience, claiming it was inhumane and degrading. He reported sharing a cell with a disruptive individual and facing unsanitary conditions, including rats infesting the area.

Mr. Turaga responded by acknowledging the issues within the police custody system, asserting that improvements have been made over the years compared to past practices. He emphasized that Mr. Saneem is entitled to express his grievances as the legal process unfolds, with the court scheduled to deliver its verdict on December 17.

The minister noted that the determination of any breach of rights will depend on the proportionality of the claims being made. He encouraged patience as the evidence is reviewed and evaluated by the court.

This situation underscores the importance of judicial processes in addressing individual rights and ensuring that claims are thoroughly examined within the legal framework. It also reflects a broader conversation about the state of detention facilities and the standards of care within them.

Summary: Justice Minister Siromi Turaga urged that claims made by Mohammed Saneem about his treatment during police custody should be left for the court to decide, with a verdict expected on December 17. Turaga acknowledged the past issues in police accommodations but noted improvements while emphasizing the importance of waiting for the court’s findings.
