Court Battle Keeps MV Sullivan Docked in Suva Harbour

The MV Sullivan, which sank in Suva Harbour, will remain submerged as legal proceedings between Fiji Ports Ltd and Venu Shipping (Fiji) Ltd continue. The Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF) CEO, Joeli Cawaki, has confirmed ongoing discussions with Venu Shipping’s managing director, Ben Naidu, regarding the situation.

Cawaki highlighted that the MV Sullivan’s accident dates back to 2015, and since then, the dispute has been tied up in court. The area where the vessel sank is within the jurisdiction of Fiji Ports. As it stands, Fiji Ports is contesting the responsibility of removing the wrecked ship, which has left the case in legal limbo.

The MSAF CEO mentioned that all documentation is being meticulously prepared, with the expectation that a legal review will ultimately clarify the responsibility regarding the incident and the subsequent removal of the vessel.

This situation underscores the complexity of maritime law and the long processes often involved in resolving such disputes. While it may be frustrating for many, it also highlights the importance of due diligence and proper legal procedure in ensuring accountability and resolution in maritime incidents.

A hopeful perspective could point to the potential for improved regulations and processes in handling maritime safety and wreck removal issues in the future, which may prevent similar situations from arising.
