Court Battle Keeps MV Sullivan Anchored in Suva Harbour

Spread the love

The MV Sullivan, which sank in Suva Harbour, will not be moved from its current position due to a pending legal dispute between Fiji Ports Ltd and its owner, Venu Shipping (Fiji) Ltd. Joeli Cawaki, the CEO of the Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF), shared insights on the ongoing situation, noting that the accident occurred in 2015 and has since led to prolonged court proceedings.

Cawaki highlighted that Fiji Ports is contesting Venu Shipping’s responsibility to remove the vessel from its boundaries. Regular discussions have taken place between Fiji Ports and Venu Shipping, with managing director Ben Naidu confirming the court case remains active. MSAF is committed to ensuring proper documentation is completed, and the eventual legal review will establish culpability.

This situation underscores the complexities involved in maritime accidents and the legal intricacies that can ensue. It is a notable reminder of the importance of maritime safety regulations and the responsibilities of shipping companies.

Amidst these challenges, it is hopeful that a resolution can be reached soon, allowing for the safe removal of the vessel and contributing to the restoration of Suva Harbour. A collaborative approach between the involved parties could pave the way for a swift conclusion, benefiting the local environment and community.
