Court Battle Erupts Over Drug Charges and Assault Claims

Three men have been remanded in custody after appearing in Suva’s Magistrates Court, facing serious charges related to illicit drug possession and assault. The individuals, identified as 29-year-old Lemeki Baleiwai, 27-year-old Maciu Jiuta, and 23-year-old Asaeli Susewa, were brought before Resident Magistrate Sufia Hamza for their hearing.

Baleiwai is charged specifically with one count of possessing illicit drugs, while Jiuta and Susewa face charges of serious assault. The Police Prosecutor informed the court that all necessary disclosures had been completed and confirmed that the defense team for the accused has acknowledged receipt of this information.

The incident under investigation occurred on November 18, 2024, during which Baleiwai was reportedly found in possession of marijuana. Meanwhile, Jiuta and Susewa are alleged to have assaulted two police officers during the operation.

The case has been scheduled for a bail hearing and further mention on November 29 in Court Four, allowing the legal process to continue.
