The Lautoka City Council has commended Peni Sigata, a dedicated employee, for his bravery in apprehending a man who robbed Lalita Devi of $6,000 on April 4. The incident occurred on Vitogo Parade just after Ms. Devi withdrew the money from the Western Union branch near ANZ Bank. As the assailant snatched her cash and fled toward Marine Drive, Sigata acted instinctively, intervening to recover the stolen money.
“I instantly made up my mind that I had to do something,” Sigata recounted, emphasizing the importance of community vigilance and support in maintaining safety. His quick action not only helped recover the funds but also served as an encouraging reminder of the positive impact individuals can have in their communities during times of crisis.
This incident highlights the shared responsibility among citizens to support one another in the face of crime, paralleling recent events in the region where community members and law enforcement collaborated effectively to ensure safety. Earlier reports included instances of armed robberies, such as one at a supermarket in Laucala Beach, where citizens’ quick thinking and police interventions resulted in arrests and ongoing investigations.
As the community reflects on this act of courage, there remains hope that such proactive measures can deter crime and enhance public safety. The Lautoka City Council’s recognition of Sigata’s actions inspires others to be vigilant and foster cooperative efforts to keep local neighborhoods secure.
