Private Mereula Kunaulu returned home from her first tour of duty with the United Nations Assistance Mission in Iraq, a moment filled with mixed emotions as she wished her late mother could witness her achievement. The homecoming was especially poignant as her mother had passed away from a brief illness shortly before she was selected for the mission while attending her funeral.
Private Mereula is one of 82 peacekeepers from the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) who recently arrived back in Fiji. Originally hailing from Navula in Navosa Province, she faced significant hurdles on her journey to a military career. Her father, Emosi Novo, expressed pride in his daughter’s accomplishments, lamenting that her mother could not be there to celebrate her success.
In addition to Mereula, another soldier, Staff Sergeant Vuata Naresia, is also back from his service. Naresia, a father of two from Narewa, Nadi, shared his commitment to launching a sustainable family project, highlighting his plans for community development after returning from his third tour of duty, which included missions in Iraq and Lebanon.
His wife, Alena Gukibau, expressed gratitude towards the RFMF leadership for trusting her husband with important responsibilities in rebuilding efforts in war-torn areas, extending her relief that he returned safely.
This story of dedication and family reflects the sacrifices and achievements of these peacekeepers, underscoring the importance of their roles in fostering peace globally while balancing personal losses and aspirations upon their return home.
In summary, the return of these soldiers not only serves as a moment of personal triumph but also reaffirms the ongoing commitment of the RFMF to peacekeeping, showcasing the resilience and strength of families supporting their loved ones in service.
