The Magistrates Court is set to make a decision on the bail application of a couple who are currently in custody on charges related to corruption. The couple, Ledua Biuvuli Matai, a former member of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF), and his wife, Taucilagi Duri, appeared before Resident Magistrate Sufia Hamza, who declined to accept their proposed sureties.
Matai is facing a charge of abuse of office for personal gain, while Duri is accused of aiding and abetting this offense. The allegations suggest that during his tenure as the RFMF’s Principal Accounts Officer, Matai did not declare a personal interest in a business named Ink Escape Supplies, which he later added as an official vendor. This decision led to the RFMF facilitating payments totaling $467,616.40 to the business from November 2019 to June 2022.
Duri is believed to have played a role in assisting her husband in these actions during the same period. The court has adjourned the matter to reconsider the proposed sureties.
It is crucial to observe that the judicial process is underway, highlighting the commitment to accountability and integrity within public service positions. Updates on this case will be provided as they arise, reflecting the legal proceedings that aim to uphold justice.
This situation underscores the importance of transparency in governance and the scrutiny that public officials face, which can lead to a more trustworthy and accountable society.
