A couple has faced charges in the Suva Magistrates Court for allegedly defrauding the Fiji Rugby Union. Pawan Deo, the former accountant for the Fiji Rugby Union, and his wife Subhashni Mudaliar are accused of conspiracy to defraud, obtaining a gain, and securing a financial advantage. According to court proceedings, Deo, who owned Sports Supplies Limited and served as the accountant for the FRU, purportedly conspired with his wife to unlawfully acquire $53,788.75 from the organization. The alleged fraudulent activity took place in 2022, during which it is claimed they improperly processed payments to SSL, resulting in a gain of $7,291.83 for the company, which they knew was not entitled to receive the amount. The Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption reported that the couple appeared in court yesterday and was subsequently remanded. A bail hearing for the case is scheduled for today.
