A couple appeared in Suva Magistrate Court today facing serious corruption allegations involving approximately $500,000. Edua Biuvuli Matai, a former Principal Accounts Officer for the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF), has been charged by the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) with abuse of office for personal gain. His wife, Taucilagi Duri, is charged with aiding and abetting this abuse.
The charges stem from actions taken between November 2019 and June 2022, during which Matai allegedly failed to disclose his personal interest in a business named Ink Escape Supplies before listing it as an RFMF vendor. This oversight reportedly led to payments totaling $467,616.40 to Ink Escape Supplies, actions that were detrimental to the RFMF’s interests.
During the court proceedings, Senior Magistrate Sufia Hamza remanded the couple due to their inability to present suitable sureties. The magistrate instructed the couple’s lawyer to find sureties who are both older than the accused and possess authority over them.
While FICAC did not oppose the granting of bail, they requested strict conditions, including a non-cash bond of $5,000, the requirement for the couple to report to FICAC monthly, and the surrendering of their travel documents. A bail hearing is scheduled to take place later today.
This situation emphasizes the importance of accountability and transparency within public offices. As this case unfolds, it serves as a reminder of the ongoing efforts in Fiji to combat corruption and uphold the rule of law.
Additionally, it is hopeful that this case will lead to greater awareness and reforms that ensure integrity in public service positions, ensuring that such breaches do not occur in the future.
