A couple appeared in Suva Magistrate Court today facing corruption allegations linked to a sum of approximately $500,000. Edua Biuvuli Matai, the former Principal Accounts Officer of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces, is charged with abusing his office for personal gain. His wife, Taucilagi Duri, faces charges of aiding and abetting his alleged misconduct.
The accusations suggest that between November 2019 and June 2022, while employed in civil service, Matai failed to declare his personal interest in a business called Ink Escape Supplies. It is alleged he improperly added this business as a vendor for the RFMF and facilitated payments totaling $467,616.40, which may have been detrimental to the RFMF.
During the proceedings, Senior Magistrate Sufia Hamza remanded the couple due to their failure to present sureties. The Magistrate directed their lawyer to arrange for sureties who are older and have authority over the accused. The Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) did not oppose bail but requested stringent conditions, including a $5,000 non-cash bond, a requirement for the couple to report to FICAC monthly, and the surrender of their travel documents. The case has been adjourned for a bail hearing.
This case highlights the ongoing commitment of authorities to uphold accountability and integrity within public service in Fiji. As the legal process unfolds, it serves as a reminder of the importance of maintaining ethical standards in governmental roles.
Summary: Edua Biuvuli Matai and his wife have been charged with corruption involving significant sums during his tenure in public service. They are currently awaiting a bail hearing, emphasizing the importance of accountability in public office.
