A couple appeared in the Suva Magistrate Court today facing corruption charges linked to an alleged misuse of nearly $500,000. Edua Biuvuli Matai, a former Principal Accounts Officer of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces, has been charged with abuse of office for personal gain. His wife, Taucilagi Duri, is charged with aiding and abetting in the abuse of office.

The charges stem from allegations that between November 2019 and June 2022, while employed in civil service, Matai abused his authority by failing to disclose his personal interest in a business, Ink Escape Supplies. He allegedly included this business as a vendor for the RFMF and facilitated payments totaling $467,616.40 to it, actions that compromised the rights of the RFMF.

During the court proceedings, Senior Magistrate Sufia Hamza stated that the couple would remain in custody as they failed to present suitable sureties. She advised their lawyer to secure individuals older than the accused to act as sureties, asserting authority over them.

The Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) did not oppose bail but requested stringent conditions; these include a non-cash bond of $5,000, monthly reports to FICAC, and the surrendering of travel documents. The case has been adjourned for a bail hearing.

This situation highlights the ongoing efforts in Fiji to uphold accountability and integrity in public office. The legal proceedings serve as a reminder of the importance of ethical conduct within government roles, emphasizing that breaches of trust will be met with rigorous scrutiny. As the court addresses this case, it reflects a commitment to transparency and justice in governance.

Overall, the outcome of this case will not only impact the individuals involved but may also set a precedent for public accountability in Fiji’s civil service.
