Counterstroke Fiji has reported a fruitful year in its efforts to support individuals affected by non-communicable diseases, particularly stroke. President Elizabeth Fong highlighted the organization’s achievements, including the successful completion of workshops aimed at educating caregivers of stroke patients. These workshops were followed by awareness programs conducted in public spaces, which aimed to distribute vital information about preventing strokes.

The involvement of stroke survivors was a significant component of these initiatives, emphasizing the critical need for early detection and timely treatment. Fong noted that this year marked the establishment of an NGO coalition that unites various organizations, along with government bodies, to collectively tackle the challenges posed by non-communicable diseases.

Among the stories shared during outreach activities were those from three stroke survivors—a 28-year-old, an older adult, and a middle-aged individual—who recounted their personal experiences and the lifestyle changes they made to prevent subsequent strokes. Fong emphasized the importance of lifestyle adjustments post-stroke to significantly reduce the likelihood of recurrence.

Counterstroke Fiji’s outreach extended to various institutions, and a notable achievement was the formation of the Coalition on Wellness. Fong expressed optimism for the future, anticipating continued advancements in stroke prevention outreach and a steadfast commitment to promoting healthy lifestyle choices as essential in minimizing the effects of non-communicable diseases within communities.

With a focus on education, collaboration, and advocacy, Counterstroke Fiji is poised to make a lasting impact in the fight against strokes and enhance the well-being of those at risk.
