Aspen Medical is facing an imminent strike involving over 200 employees scheduled to commence at 7 a.m. on February 6, 2025. The Construction, Energy and Timber Workers Union of Fiji (CETWUF) has served the company with a formal strike notice as frustrations have escalated over ongoing issues related to wages and working conditions that have remained unaddressed since 2017.

During a recent meeting, CETWUF National Secretary John Paul emphasized that the union members, including various staff such as chefs, ward assistants, and laboratory technicians from the Lautoka and Ba hospitals, are determined to proceed with the strike unless substantial progress is made in negotiations. Mr. Paul stressed that the union has already provided Aspen Medical with an additional week beyond the statutory notice period, demonstrating their willingness to find a resolution without resorting to striking.

The union’s concerns are compounded by rising living costs and a perceived neglect of their demands, which includes calls for salary increases and improved working conditions. Previous discussions have yielded little outcome, prompting the union to declare that this strike is a last resort. Paul further clarified that Aspen Medical’s attempts to shift responsibility to the government regarding labor issues are unacceptable.

On the company’s side, a spokesperson stated that Aspen Medical is committed to maintaining due process during negotiations and has engaged in mediation efforts with CETWUF. They have also noted preparations for a contingency plan to ensure patient care won’t be interrupted should the strike take place.
