The Great Council of Chiefs (GCC) is advocating for modifications to the 2013 Constitution. Following the first day of their meeting in Suva, GCC Chairperson Ratu Viliame Seruvakula emphasized the necessity of amending laws that significantly affect the i-Taukei community to ensure progress.

Currently, approximately 33 laws have a direct impact on the i-Taukei people. Out of these, 16 have already been amended, but the remainder are still under consideration. Seruvakula remarked that for meaningful change to occur, government intervention is essential.

He noted the importance of being pragmatic, acknowledging that legislative change is not instantaneous. The Solicitor-General, Ropate Green Lomavatu, addressed the members, outlining various legislations that are either under review or have already been adjusted. Seruvakula reiterated that adapting within the framework of existing laws and utilizing available resources is crucial in this process.

As the discussions continue, there is a sense of optimism that constructive dialogue and collaboration between the GCC and the government could lead to positive outcomes for the i-Taukei community.

This ongoing meeting may serve as a significant step towards more responsive governance, emphasizing the importance of inclusive policies that consider the unique needs of diverse communities.
