The University of the South Pacific (USP) Council is scheduled to hold a meeting later this month in the Cook Islands, with the primary goal of addressing the allegations against Vice-Chancellor and President, Professor Pal Ahluwalia. Education Minister Aseri Radrodro confirmed this development, noting that the council will also work on establishing the ‘Terms of Reference’ for the ongoing investigation.
In addition to reviewing the allegations against the Vice-Chancellor, the council is set to confirm the appointment status of the Pro-Chancellor, a role currently filled by Dr. Heila Heine in an acting capacity. Minister Radrodro mentioned that the first round of voting for the Pro-Chancellor position has already been conducted, and a second round is anticipated soon.
Radrodro emphasized the collective eagerness of council members to receive updates from the Acting Pro-Chancellor and the Secretariat, along with legal advice, regarding the Pro-Chancellor’s appointment. This meeting presents an opportunity for transparency and clarity within the university’s governance structure, which could ultimately strengthen the institution’s leadership.
The ongoing investigation and the forthcoming council meeting could serve as a turning point for USP, as it underscores the commitment to upholding academic integrity and responsive governance. By engaging with these critical issues, the University can not only address immediate concerns but also reinforce its dedication to fostering a stable and accountable educational environment.
