Taekwondo coach and grandmaster Andy Rutten has expressed a strong belief that Fiji has the potential to emerge as the leading nation in the sport within the Oceania region. Since relocating to Fiji last year, the German-born coach has dedicated himself to nurturing taekwondo talent across the country.

With a wealth of experience, including coaching Papua New Guinea athletes at two Olympic Games, Rutten has been actively running training programs and camps aimed at developing local talent. Throughout his time in Fiji, he has observed a remarkable depth of skills among the athletes, which he finds quite encouraging.

Rutten commented, “In my opinion it is an incredible sport, and can be an Olympic medal sport for Fiji if the government had better supporting programs so that kids have better exposure to high performance. I think Fiji could be one of the leading countries in the Oceania.”

Despite his optimism, Rutten also highlighted significant challenges that the sport faces, including limited support and the absence of structured, high-level training programs. However, he remains hopeful that with the right resources and development pathways, Fiji can rise to compete for medals at future Olympic Games.

His positive outlook reinforces the idea that with commitment and investment in sports development, Fiji can unlock its potential in taekwondo and other competitive arenas. This vision aligns with broader goals of promoting sports in the region, suggesting a bright future for aspiring athletes.
