The recent tribunal investigating the allegations of misconduct against Christopher Pryde, the reinstated Director of Public Prosecutions, incurred an expense of FJ$88,597.45 to Fijian taxpayers, according to a report from the Office of the President.

The three-member tribunal, led by Justice Anare Tuilevuka and including Justices Chaitanya Lakshman and Samuela Qica, was officially sworn in by former President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere on March 5, 2024. Initially appointed for a three-month duration, the tribunal’s mandate was extended twice due to unfolding circumstances requiring further inquiry.

The first extension occurred on May 10, 2024, granting an additional three months to the tribunal. The necessity for this extension arose when a second allegation was referred to the tribunal, based on advice from the Judicial Services Commission, pertaining to Mr. Pryde allegedly receiving a monthly superannuation payment of US$1,000 (approximately FJ$2,313) from March 2012 to July 2023 without the required approval from the relevant authorities.

To support its work, the tribunal appointed legal counsel, investigators, and secretariat staff, leading to a series of 29 briefings between March 5 and November 25, 2024. The formal hearings were then held over five days from December 2 to December 6 of that year.

This thorough process highlights the diligence with which legal proceedings are treated, aiming to ensure justice is served and transparency maintained in governmental roles.

It is essential to recognize the commitment to accountability demonstrated by this tribunal, reflecting a broader effort towards maintaining integrity within public office. Such processes, while they may incur costs, are vital for fostering trust in public institutions and ensuring that public officials are held to high standards.

In summary, despite the financial implications, the procedures undertaken serve to reinforce the principles of transparency and accountability in Fiji’s judicial system.
