Justice David Ashton-Lewis, leading the Commission of Inquiry (COI) into the controversial appointment of Barbara Malimali as the Commissioner of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC), has revealed that nine individuals, including cabinet members, are implicated in serious allegations surrounding the appointment process. During an interview on Radio 4CRB, an Australia-based community station, Ashton-Lewis expressed concerns over the integrity of some involved, noting that while one individual publicly supports Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, they are suspected of covertly undermining him—prompting Ashton-Lewis to refer to them as a “wannabe Prime Minister.”

The inquiry, focused on potential misconduct, suggests that some who took oaths of office may have actively obstructed justice in the appointment of Malimali, who is perceived as corrupt by the public. Justice Ashton-Lewis claims to have uncovered criminal acts committed by these individuals and has raised alarm over efforts to suppress the report’s findings. He has submitted a 600-page report containing 73 recommendations for action by the Prime Minister and President Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, who are expected to address these concerns before the report’s public release.

As part of the ongoing efforts to enhance governmental accountability and transparency in Fiji, Ashton-Lewis aims to establish a thorough examination of the factors influencing Malimali’s appointment, amidst concerns of political interference linked to ongoing investigations into notable figures. This inquiry not only highlights the need for integrity in public service appointments but also represents a significant step toward restoring public trust in Fiji’s political landscape.

There is optimism surrounding the inquiry’s potential to reinforce ethical standards within Fiji’s governance. As the process unfolds, it reflects a collective commitment to ensuring that governmental operations are transparent and free from undue influence, paving the way for meaningful reforms and renewed confidence among the populace.
