A couple made their appearance in the Suva Magistrate Court this afternoon facing serious allegations of corruption involving approximately $500,000. Edua Biuvuli Matai, who previously served as the Principal Accounts Officer for the Republic of Fiji Military Forces, has been charged by the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) with abuse of office for personal gain. His wife, Taucilagi Duri, is charged with aiding and abetting that abuse.
The charges stem from activities between November 2019 and June 2022, during which Matai allegedly violated the authority of his position. He is accused of failing to disclose his personal interest in a business called Ink Escape Supplies and subsequently adding this business as a vendor for the RFMF. This action supposedly resulted in substantial payments totaling $467,616.40 to Ink Escape Supplies, adversely affecting the interests of the RFMF.
The couple appeared before Senior Magistrate Sufia Hamza and were remanded in custody as they could not provide the required sureties. Magistrate Hamza instructed the couple’s attorney to identify sureties who are older than the accused and have authority over them. Although FICAC did not object to bail, they requested that strict conditions be imposed, including a $5,000 non-cash bond, monthly reporting to FICAC, and the surrender of their travel documents.
The case has been postponed for a bail hearing, illustrating the court’s careful approach to ensuring accountability and transparency in public office. Legal proceedings such as these underscore the importance of integrity in public service and could serve as a deterrent against corruption.
This situation presents an opportunity for reflection on ethical conduct within government roles, ultimately reinforcing the necessity for accountability and a continued commitment to integrity in public service.
