Corruption in Focus: Fiji’s New Commissioner Faces Scrutiny

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has stated that Barbara Malimali, the newly appointed Commissioner for the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption, does not need to be removed from her position amid ongoing investigations. Rabuka clarified to reporters that the investigation is unrelated to her appointment.

He noted that the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) is currently overseeing the investigation, which is a distinct issue. “If she did something, she needs to face the consequences,” Rabuka remarked.

The DPP’s office has forwarded Malimali’s investigation file to the Director of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) for a thorough inquiry. This action follows discussions between Acting DPP Nancy Tikoisuva and Deputy DPP John Rabuku, who is tasked with reviewing the matter.

A determination was made that the investigation was not yet complete, prompting the transfer of the file to the CID for further examination and recommendations. The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions has indicated that an update will be provided once the review is finalized and the investigation file is returned for further action.

In terms of context, Malimali is under investigation for alleged abuse of office, with the complaint arising from her previous role as Chairperson of the Electoral Commission.
