A former senior estate officer with the iTaukei Land Trust Board, Inosi Tauvoli, has been sentenced to two years in prison for corruption-related offenses. Convicted on three counts of abuse of office, Tauvoli approved land lease applications for three Chinese nationals without following the proper procedures during his tenure from October 2018 to January 2019.
High Court Judge Justice Aruna Aluthge emphasized the severity of the misconduct, noting that such actions erode public trust in government institutions. Despite being the primary income earner for his family and lacking a prior criminal record, the judge highlighted that the betrayal of public trust warranted serious consequences. The sentence aims to deter others from similar misconduct, underscoring that such abuses of public office will not be tolerated.
Tauvoli’s sentence includes one year suspended, meaning he will serve two years in prison, with the remaining year suspended for three years. After serving at least 20 months, he may be eligible for parole.
The case serves as a reminder of ongoing corruption challenges within Fiji’s public service, particularly at the TLTB, which has seen several former employees facing similar charges. Efforts by the judiciary to hold officials accountable reflect a commitment to restoring integrity and trust in government operations. As these legal proceedings unfold, there is hope for a more transparent and ethical public service in Fiji, fostering greater public confidence in government institutions.
