The Ministry of Education has reported incidents of financial misconduct in schools to the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC).
These incidents involve schools that received funding for various projects but failed to submit receipts, with some projects either incomplete or never initiated.
Ilisoni Waqa, the Principal Education Officer at the Ministry’s Assets and Infrastructure Services, shared this information, stating, “We have referred cases for audit and FICAC is conducting interviews and requesting documentation. We have been assisting them by providing the evidence they need to support their investigations and resolve these pending issues.”
When inquired about the number of schools involved, he noted, “I don’t have the numbers with me, but I will get back to you,” and he did not provide further specifics regarding the schools in question.
For instance, in Nasoki Village, a request was made for help in completing a double-storey classroom. Mr. Waqa confirmed that assistance was rendered, but the school did not produce the necessary receipts for documentation.
He stressed the importance of utilizing government funds responsibly and maintaining precise records. “When funds are given to schools, we expect them to be used for their intended purpose. Schools with good records are more likely to receive funding for future projects,” Mr. Waqa highlighted, encouraging educational institutions to keep accurate records of all expenditures related to projects.
