The Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) has decided to close the complaint against Minister for Education, Aseri Radrodro, regarding alleged unlawful termination and recruitment issues in the Ministry of Education. FICAC stated that it lacks jurisdiction for such complaints, emphasizing that matters of unlawful termination are best addressed by the Ministry of Employment, Productivity, and Industrial Relations (MEPIR) or through the court system.

The allegations against Radrodro included interference in disciplinary cases, wrongful terminations, abuse of power, and appointing individuals without adhering to established protocols. Critics claimed that he terminated employees based on personal grievances or to favor individuals he had personal connections with.

In a statement, FICAC reiterated its commitment to conduct operations independently and impartially, upholding the rule of law without fear or favor. This decision came amidst ongoing discussions regarding accountability and governance within Fiji’s public service.

This situation reflects a broader concern regarding governance and administrative integrity within the Ministry of Education. Similar allegations had previously been raised by four former officials of the ministry who contested their dismissals in court, claiming that their terminations followed a lack of due process. Officials emphasized that the ministry adhered to the Employment Relations Act and other guidelines during hiring processes.

The Ministry of Education has responded by asserting that all recruitment practices are conducted transparently and consistently with legal standards. This commitment to fair governance is a crucial step towards rebuilding trust in the public sector. As the situation evolves, it provides an opportunity to reinforce principles of transparency and accountability in Fiji’s public institutions.

The focus on improving governance practices may lead to a more robust educational environment, fostering growth and enhancing public confidence in government operations.
