The Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) has forwarded a case involving its Commissioner, Barbara Malimali, to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecution (ODPP) for further evaluation. This referral relates to allegations of Abuse of Office against Malimali during her time as the Electoral Chair with the Electoral Commission of Fiji (ECF).
Additionally, FICAC announced the closure of five cases that were previously referred by the Supervisor of Elections earlier this year, with the Supervisor being informed of this decision on July 24, 2024.
The closed cases include:
– Allegations of corrupt practices associated with the FijiFirst Party, including false declarations involving the Fiji First Australia Association Incorporated, Mr. Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, and Tito Bainimarama.
– A complaint against Mr. Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum and Mr. Mohammed Saneem regarding collusion and conflicts of interest, as well as Mr. Arif Ali for donating $10,000 to the FijiFirst Party while serving as a civil servant.
– Complaints involving His Excellency, The President of the Republic of Fiji, Ratu Wiliame Katonivere, along with Mr. Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum and Mr. Charan Jeath Singh.
– Allegations against Mr. Voreqe Bainimarama for providing false declarations of his income, assets, and liabilities from 2014 to 2019 and in 2022.
– A complaint against Mr. Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum for not declaring overseas travel allowances.
FICAC has stated that other matters referred by the Supervisor of Elections are still under investigation, and the Commission will refrain from making any comments until these investigations are concluded. FICAC assured the public that its operations continue as normal, and it remains committed to thoroughly addressing all complaints, regardless of the individuals involved.
