Former National Fire Authority (NFA) Board Chair John O’Connor has pleaded “Not Guilty” to charges of corruption brought by the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC). O’Connor appeared in Suva’s Magistrates Court alongside Daniel Whippy, the Managing Director of Carpenters Fiji, who has also entered a “Not Guilty” plea concerning related allegations.

O’Connor faces a charge of Abuse of Office, arising from incidents between January 1 and September 28, 2018, during which he allegedly directed NFA officers to alter the findings of a fire investigation report regarding a fire at the MH Warehouse in Walu Bay on April 8, 2018. This claim suggests that O’Connor’s actions were detrimental to the rights of the NFA and intended to benefit himself personally.

Whippy is charged with Counseling for the Omission of Offense, accused of advising O’Connor to make these unauthorized amendments to the investigation report. During the court session, Whippy’s attorney informed the magistrate that he requires medical treatment overseas, specifically knee surgery, for which permission to travel has been granted, lifting a Stop Departure Order for the period between February 2 and March 1, 2025.

The ongoing legal proceedings underscore the crucial importance of accountability in both public and private sectors within Fiji. As the case unfolds, it reflects a commitment to uphold integrity and accountability amongst public officials. The next court mention is set for March 3, 2025, which will allow for further developments to be addressed.

This case serves as a pivotal moment for integrity in governance, shedding light on the mechanisms in place to uphold justice. The hope remains that these proceedings will ultimately reinforce public trust in leadership, emphasizing the importance of ethical conduct within institutions.
