Corruption Charges Rock Fiji: Former NFA Chair Pleads Not Guilty

Former National Fire Authority (NFA) Board Chair John O’Connor has formally pleaded “Not Guilty” to corruption charges raised by the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC). This plea was made during a recent court appearance at the Suva Magistrates Court, where O’Connor was joined by Daniel Whippy, the Managing Director of Carpenters Fiji, who also entered a “Not Guilty” plea.

O’Connor faces a count of Abuse of Office, specifically accused of directing NFA officers to alter findings in a fire investigation report concerning a fire that occurred on April 8, 2018, at the MH Warehouse in Walu Bay. The allegations suggest that this misconduct took place between January 1 and September 28, 2018, and were prejudicial to the rights of the NFA, ostensibly aimed at providing O’Connor with personal benefits.

In parallel, Whippy is charged with Counseling for the Omission of Offense, as he is alleged to have advised O’Connor regarding alterations to the investigation report.

During the proceedings, Whippy’s counsel informed the court that he requires knee surgery and has sought permission to travel abroad for this medical treatment, scheduled between February 2 and March 1, 2025. The FICAC prosecutor did not contest this travel request, leading to the lifting of a Stop Departure Order for the defined period.

The court has set the next mention for March 3, 2025, during which further hearing dates will be determined. This ongoing case not only addresses serious allegations but also underscores the critical need for accountability and transparency in public institutions. As the judicial process continues, there is hope that it will reinforce integrity in governance and restore public trust in leadership, emphasizing the importance of ethical standards in both public and private sectors.
