Former National Fire Authority (NFA) Board Chair John O’Connor has pleaded “Not Guilty” to corruption charges brought forth by the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC). O’Connor, alongside Carpenters Fiji Managing Director Daniel Whippy, appeared in Suva Magistrates Court, where he faces allegations of abusing his office.
The charges against O’Connor stem from events between January 1, 2018, and September 28, 2018, during which he allegedly directed NFA officers to alter findings in their fire investigation report concerning the April 8, 2018, fire at MH Warehouse in Walu Bay. This alleged misconduct is claimed to have been prejudicial to the rights of the NFA and aimed at providing a personal benefit to O’Connor.
Whippy, in relation to these events, has also entered a plea of “Not Guilty,” facing one count of counseling the omission of the offense, as he is accused of advising O’Connor to amend the investigation findings. During the proceedings, Whippy’s attorney informed the court of his client’s need for medical treatment outside the country, seeking permission to travel for knee surgery scheduled between February 2 and March 1, 2025. FICAC’s prosecutor did not contest this travel request, leading to the lifting of a Stop Departure Order.
The court scheduled a follow-up hearing for March 3, 2025, to address the ongoing case and to fix a date for the trial.
This case highlights ongoing efforts to ensure accountability in public office and corporate governance, reflecting the critical role that legal proceedings play in upholding justice. Amidst the serious nature of the allegations, the respect for health rights and due process reinforces hope for integrity in both private and public sectors in Fiji as these matters continue to unfold.
