A couple faced the Suva Magistrate Court today in connection with alleged corruption involving approximately $500,000. Edua Biuvuli Matai, the former Principal Accounts Officer of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces, has been charged by the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) with abuse of office for personal gain. His wife, Taucilagi Duri, is charged with aiding and abetting this abuse of office.
The allegations state that between November 2019 and June 2022, while employed in the civil service, Matai misused his authority by not declaring his personal interest in a business called Ink Escape Supplies. He is accused of incorporating this business as a vendor for the RFMF and subsequently facilitating payments totaling $467,616.40 to it, which prejudiced the rights of the RFMF.
During the court proceedings before Senior Magistrate Sufia Hamza, the couple was remanded in custody due to their failure to provide sureties. The magistrate instructed their legal counsel to arrange for sureties who are older and hold authority over the accused. FICAC did not oppose bail but requested strict conditions, including a non-cash bond of $5,000, monthly reporting to FICAC, and the surrender of travel documents. The case has been adjourned for a bail hearing.
This incident highlights the ongoing efforts of FICAC in tackling corruption within public services, emphasizing the need for accountability and integrity in governance. As the case progresses, it will serve as a reminder of the importance of transparency in public office, reinforcing public trust in governmental institutions.
