Corruption Charges: Former NFA Chair Pleads Not Guilty in Court

Former National Fire Authority (NFA) Board Chair John O’Connor has pleaded “Not Guilty” to corruption charges brought against him by the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC). This legal development occurred during a court appearance in Suva, where O’Connor faced accusations of abusing his office while serving as the NFA Chair.

Alongside him was Daniel Whippy, the Managing Director of Carpenters Fiji, who is charged with “Counseling for the Omission of the Offense.” The charges stem from a fire incident at Carpenters Fiji’s MH Warehouse in Walu Bay in April 2018. Allegations suggest that from January to September 2018, O’Connor misused his authority by instructing officers to alter the findings of a fire investigation report regarding the incident, which may have been to his personal benefit. Whippy is alleged to have counseled O’Connor in this misconduct.

In a notable aspect of their court proceedings, Whippy’s legal counsel indicated that he requires urgent knee surgery and has been granted permission to travel to the United States for treatment. The court agreed to lift a Stop Departure Order, temporarily allowing Whippy to leave for medical care after providing sureties for his return, including a bond and a conditional deposit of $50,000.

The case continues to unfold, with the next court mention scheduled for March 3, 2025, at which time a hearing will be fixed.

This legal situation underscores the critical need for accountability and integrity within public institutions, something that many citizens hope will be reinforced as the judicial process takes its course. As the proceedings develop, they are expected to promote discussions around ethical conduct and transparency in governance, with the potential for positive outcomes in restoring public trust.
