Former National Fire Authority (NFA) Board Chair John O’Connor has pleaded “Not Guilty” to corruption charges initiated by the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC). This development occurred during a court appearance at the Suva Magistrates Court, where O’Connor, along with Daniel Whippy, Managing Director of Carpenters Fiji, faced serious criminal allegations.

O’Connor is charged with Abuse of Office, linked to events that transpired between January 1 and September 28, 2018. During this period, he is accused of directing NFA officers to alter findings in a fire investigation report about a blaze at the MH Warehouse in Walu Bay on April 8, 2018. These actions are purportedly intended to benefit him personally and were detrimental to the rights of the NFA.

Similarly, Whippy has entered a plea of “Not Guilty” as well, facing charges for Counseling for the Omission of the Offense. He is alleged to have advised O’Connor to make unauthorized amendments to the investigation report.

In a notable turn of events during the proceedings, Whippy’s attorney informed the court of his client’s need for knee surgery, requesting permission to travel overseas for the procedure. The FICAC prosecutor did not oppose the request, leading to the lifting of a Stop Departure Order for Whippy from January 30, 2025, to March 2, 2025, allowing him to seek medical treatment.

The next court session for both defendants is scheduled for March 3, 2025, where further proceedings will be arranged.

This case underscores the ongoing efforts to ensure accountability in public institutions in Fiji, a vital aspect of maintaining trust in governance. As the legal process unfolds, it is crucial for all parties involved to adhere to principles of transparency and integrity. This situation also reflects the importance of due process, as health rights and legal responsibilities are balanced within the judicial framework. Despite the serious nature of the allegations, there remains hope for a resolution that fosters accountability and ethical governance, contributing to public trust in leadership.
