Former National Fire Authority (NFA) Board Chair John O’Connor has pleaded “Not Guilty” to charges of corruption filed by the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC). O’Connor, alongside Daniel Whippy, the Managing Director of Carpenters Fiji, appeared at the Suva Magistrates Court to address the allegations against them.
O’Connor faces one count of Abuse of Office, with the indictment stating that between January 1 and September 28, 2018, he allegedly instructed NFA officers to alter the findings of their investigation report regarding a fire that occurred at the MH Warehouse in Walu Bay on April 8, 2018. These actions are said to have undermined the rights of the NFA and intended to provide personal benefits to O’Connor.
Whippy has also entered a plea of “Not Guilty,” facing a charge of Counseling for the Omission of Offense. It is alleged that he advised O’Connor to make these unauthorized amendments to the investigation report.
During the court proceedings, Whippy’s legal counsel informed the judge that he requires medical treatment for knee surgery overseas, seeking permission to travel from February 2 to March 1, 2025. The FICAC prosecutor did not object to his travel request, resulting in the lifting of a Stop Departure Order for the specified period.
The case is set for a follow-up mention on March 3, 2025, to establish a hearing date.
This unfolding legal battle demonstrates the importance of accountability within public institutions and corporate governance in Fiji, reflecting a commitment to uphold integrity in governance. As the case progresses, there remains hope for a resolution that reinforces public trust in leadership and ethical conduct, highlighting the necessity of due process in maintaining fairness and transparency.
