The former Minister for Fisheries and Forests, Kalaveti Ravu, was absent from court today during proceedings related to his corruption case at the Magistrates Court in Suva. His attorney, Jioji Cakau, explained that Ravu was attending Parliamentary duties in Nadi. However, State counsel Lavenia Ravuikadavu contended that the court had not been notified of Ravu’s absence.
Co-defendant Tekata Toaisi, the former Fisheries and Forests Regional Manager North, attended the hearing. Ravu is accused of intervening unlawfully in a Ministry of Forestry investigation concerning illegal trades of banned species of beche-de-mer between July 25 and August 31, 2023. Toaisi allegedly assisted Ravu in committing abuse of office during this period.
The case is scheduled to be reconsidered on January 21.
This situation highlights ongoing concerns regarding corruption and misuse of power within government bodies. As the legal process unfolds, it emphasizes the importance of accountability in public office, which is crucial for restoring public trust in governmental institutions. The decision to reconvene the case in January provides an opportunity for a thorough examination of the allegations, paving the way for justice and potential reforms in how such matters are handled in the future.
