Former Fisheries and Forests Minister Kalaveti Ravu was absent from the Magistrates Court in Suva today as his corruption case was called. His attorney, Jioji Cakau, informed the court that Ravu was in Nadi fulfilling his parliamentary duties. However, State counsel Lavenia Ravuikadavu noted that there was no prior notice regarding Ravu’s absence.
Tekata Toaisi, the former Regional Manager for Fisheries and Forests in the North, attended the hearing. Both Ravu and Toaisi face serious allegations related to the interference in an investigation by the Ministry of Forestry concerning the illegal trade of prohibited species of beche-de-mer. It is claimed that Ravu abused his office during this time, while Toaisi assisted him in these actions.
The hearing has been rescheduled to take place again on January 21.
This case highlights the ongoing efforts to address corruption within governmental sectors, emphasizing the importance of upholding integrity and accountability in public service. It serves as a reminder of the legal obligations that officials must adhere to in their roles. As the case progresses, it will be critical to follow how the legal system addresses such allegations and promotes transparency in governance.
