The Commissioner of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC), Babara Malimali, has not yet reviewed the approval for additional disclosures in the legal case involving former Fiji Broadcasting Corporation (FBC) CEO Riyaz Sayed-Khaiyum and current CFO Vimlesh Sagar. During a court session, FICAC lawyer Mary Takinana informed Suva Magistrate Krishan Prasad that although a written response was ready, it was still pending Malimali’s review.
The defense attorneys for Sayed-Khaiyum and Sagar have opted to refrain from entering pleas until all necessary disclosures are provided. Magistrate Prasad has set a deadline for FICAC to clarify its stance on the charges by January.
Sayed-Khaiyum is facing charges related to abuse of office for personal gain and general dishonesty, accused of generating over $138,000 in legal expenses without the board’s consent from July 2017 to January 2023. Meanwhile, Sagar is charged with general dishonesty for authorizing payments of $15,075.88 to R Patel Lawyers without board approval in 2023. The next court session for this case is scheduled to take place on January 24.
This case highlights the ongoing efforts within Fiji’s institutions to ensure accountability and transparency in governance. The anticipated disclosures and court proceedings may pave the way for clearer insight into corporate governance practices in Fiji, reflecting a broader commitment to integrity and justice.
Summary: The FICAC Commissioner has yet to approve further disclosures in the legal case against former FBC CEO Riyaz Sayed-Khaiyum and CFO Vimlesh Sagar, who face charges of abuse of office and general dishonesty. The case is set to resume on January 24.
