A police officer is currently facing a criminal investigation for allegedly engaging in drug dealing. Security camera footage captured the officer purchasing what appeared to be drugs from two individuals at a market in the Central Division.

Acting Commissioner of Police, Juki Fong Chew, confirmed the situation and stated that the officer has been suspended during an ongoing inquiry by the Internal Affairs and the Criminal Investigation Department (CID). “The officer has been directed to take all his leave. Following this, he will be suspended without pay, and all uniforms and accessories will be confiscated,” according to a statement released.

Mr. Fong Chew emphasized the importance of maintaining the core values of policing. He stated that any officer involved in corrupt activities that undermine the laws they are sworn to uphold will face disciplinary proceedings and criminal investigations. He warned that non-compliance could lead to immediate disciplinary measures, including termination if found guilty in court.

He also highlighted the repercussions of such actions on the families of the officers involved, urging them to recognize the impact their failures can have. “Officers who stray from the ethics and values of policing have no place within our ranks,” he said.

Moreover, Mr. Fong Chew encouraged the community to report any information regarding the illicit drug trade, assuring that all details would be kept confidential and that breaches of confidentiality would be addressed through internal processes.

Despite some public skepticism about the Fiji Police Force’s commitment to addressing illegal activities among its ranks, the Acting Commissioner pointed to monthly crime statistics released by the department, which demonstrate that serious actions are taken when reports are made.

He reiterated that corrupt practices will not be tolerated, and any official report lodged will undergo thorough investigation.

This ongoing investigation highlights the commitment of law enforcement agencies to uphold the integrity of the police force, reflecting a step towards accountability in combating corruption and drug-related offenses. By encouraging public participation, the police are fostering a community-centric approach to maintaining safety and trust.
